Need a quick and easy Valentine door decoration? Cover your kids’ bedroom doors with paper conversation hearts and surprise them on Valentine’s Day morning. All you need is colored paper, a Sharpie, a pair of scissors, and tape. I use card stock leftover from my scrapbooking days, but any paper in any color you choose will work.
Cut out hearts of various sizes – you can cut free hand or print out templates. I use the ones at this website. I find it easiest to cut right outside of the lines and flip the heart over to write on it. Write words or phrases in the middle of each heart, tailoring it to your child. Some suggestions:
- xoxo
- hugs
- I luv u
- cutie
- beautiful
- u rock
- my angel
- u r sweet (smart, special, kind, etc)
- honey
- #1
- the best daughter / son ever (only if you have just one of each!)
After the kiddos go to sleep on February 13th, tape these hearts to their bedroom doors so they are greeted with declarations of your love first thing in the morning. The first time I did this, I had to point out my handiwork, since both kids walked out of their rooms without a backward glance. Now they make it a point to see what I’ve come up with each year.
- I have been decorating my kids’ doors for the past four years – this Valentine craft is the extent of my Martha Stewart-ness. Here are their doors, almost a year after the hearts went up!
My kids leave the decorations on their doors until I replace them with new ones on the next Valentine’s Day. Given that they are 11 and 14 years old, I think it’s sweet that they still look forward to the hearts each year. I’m still the meanest mom ever, but for a few minutes on the morning of February 14th, I’ll be the best.

So sweet idea!! Will probably do this when my son is a bit older and knows how to read. 🙂 Simple yet very special and I love that your kids still eagerly wait for the hearts to be pinned on their doors every Valentines.
I’m visiting from #LOBS. Great weekend to you Dana! 🙂

First of all I really thought/ know that I hold the title for being the meanest worst mom in the world – just ask my kids. But are you telling me that for one moment or day I will get points if I do this?! I am going right now to start making hearts! 🙂 <3 Have a great day and a great Valentines Day.
