I’m easing into summer and trying to get ready for our family vacation to California next week, so it’s time for a light and easy post for Twisted Mix Tape Tuesday. Today we are taking a trip back to the decade of my birth, the 1970s. Pull on your bell bottoms and snack on some pop rocks, and get your groove on with some seventies music!
Because I was born too late musically, some of my favorite bands were popular in the seventies. My mix tape would include lots of songs from these groups, but here are some of my favorites.
I remember a white cassette tape that my parents had recorded a Four Seasons album onto – I took that tape and played it until it unraveled. So when the musical Jersey Boys came to Broadway, I already knew all the words to the soundtrack. So many favorites – but narrowing it down to the 1970s I have to go with this one.
Just a fun song that for some reason reminds me of summertime:
If You Leave Me Now – Chicago (1976)
This band has been around since 1967, and they came out with an album every single year in the seventies. This is one I sang through the eighties, serenading the cute boys in Tiger Beat holding my hairbrush as a microphone.
Movin’Out (Anthony’s Song) – Billy Joel (1978)
Billy Joel’s Only the Good Die Young made it onto my other mix tape; here’s another one of my favorites.
Sir Duke – Stevie Wonder (1977)
And I saved the best for last. He was one of my parents’ favorites, he’s one of mine, and now my children love him too. The one and only Stevie Wonder. How can I pick a favorite? Superstition is a great one, but I’m going with Sir Duke.
Tamara says
Ooh, a California trip! I’m dying here. Pretty much all of Led Zeppelin, although I’m not sure that’s the 70’s music you were thinking of. And The Kinks! Clapton…
Dana says
I’ll take lots of pictures for you, Tamara ๐ Sounds like we have different taste in music – quite a few people in this link up have an edgier take like you do.
Kerri says
KISS…my first crush at all of 8YO sang Beth to me even though my name isn’t Beth. (swoon). We took my parents to the Jersey Boys about 2 Christmas’ ago. They are now groupies seeing them in London, CA and VA!!
Dana says
I think I’d like your parents! My husband loves KISS, but I never really got into them. Have you seen Role Models? There’s a great rendition of Beth at the end.
Kath Galasso (@KatsTheory) says
Sir Duke… the entire album was perfect. Mellow but nice.
Dana says
I totally agree – it’s one of my favorites.
Kristi Campbell says
I have “If You Leave Me Now” by Chicago on my ipod! And now it will be even more awesome each time it loads because I will picture your cute little self singing along to it using a hairbrush as a microphone! Great pics, Dana!
Dana says
Sorry to ruin that song for you, Kristi – but we’re even, because I’ve been singing Tragedy ever since I read your picks!
Kristi Campbell says
It’s been in my head all day, too. And opposite of ruined! You made it better ๐
Melissa Lala says
Throw in some Jackson 5 (“Ben” is my favorite) and Elton John and you’d have the perfect 70’s playlist.
Dana says
I agree, Melissa – but notice I did not include any Barry Manilow ๐
Tracy@CrazyAsNormal says
“Joy to World” just makes me smile. We saw them at an art festival a few years ago and watching the entire audience, kids and grown-ups alike” singing along was kinda awesome.
Dana says
That is awesome – some songs just make everyone sing along, don’t they?
Suzanne @AndMyHouse says
I love that Chicago and Billy Joel song. My uncle to me and my cousin to see Three Dog Night, I think I was ten!!
Dana says
So cool – I didn’t go to my first concert until I was 18 or so – Billy Joel, of course ๐
Deanna Ritz says
Hi, I found your blog at the naptime review and am your newest Twitter and bloglovin follower. I would love a follow back at gloriouslymade.blogspot.com.
Have a great day!
Deanna
Dana says
Thanks for visiting, Deanna – I will follow back!
Michelle says
Loved Billy Joel’s Movin’ Out and Chicago’s If You Leave Me Now! Do your kids appreciate the oldies? One of mine has a Helen Reddy song on her iPod!
Dana says
My kids do, Michelle – especially Billy Joel, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Queen…stuff their parents make them listen to, and they end up liking it!
Lance says
Not my genre(s) but Chicago belongs in the rock n roll Hall of Fame, especially for their Peter Kath period. Billy Joel went from overrated to underrated in the past 20 years…weird.
Dana says
Just read your list, Lance – my mix is definitely not your genre! I’m hearing lots of new music today though, which is pretty cool.
clark says
which is cooler? that we see a title and can hear the song in our heads (from a lifetime ago) or when we see titles and remember that we forgot we liked the songs.
very good list. the Decade was only slightly amazing.
Dana says
I know – sometimes I think I don’t know a song from the title, and then when it starts playing I started smiling in recognition.
Janine Huldie says
Yes, yes, yes to all of the above, especially Billy Joel’s Anthony’s Song!! I actually saw him live in concert at MSG and he puts on an amazing show. Would totally see him in concert again if I could!! ๐
Dana says
Me too – he was my very first concert!
Dream says
What fantastic songs! There was even on there that I love and never knew the actual name of (Sir Duke). Enjoyable and educational!
Dana says
Well, I’m glad I could teach you something today! That doesn’t happen to me very often…
Sarah Almond says
Joy to the World almost ended up on my list too. Three Dog Night! YES! And good old Chicago. I had all of the records starting with Chicago Transit Authority all the way up to 20 I believe. I just put some Chicago on my Ipod today when I realized it was seriously lacking some Peter Cetera!
Dana says
He’s one of those voices that you instantly recognize, isn’t he? I’ve gotta add some Chicago to my ipod too!
Slu says
Nice memories… My wife loves your list too.
Thanks!!! Have a great week, Slu
Dana says
Thanks, Slu- your wife has good taste ๐
Jen says
Well you are now officially my sister’s best friend. She is sitting next to me as I listen to your mix. She is the one who made me see Jersey Boys TWICE IN ONE MONTH! I loved this song anyway…but now it means more! Sir Duke was going to be on my list next week! That song is so amazing. So amazing. The music lover’s groove.
Chicago is another one of those bands I think I could put on any mix, Billy Joel too…
You blew me away with this list my friend, they are all favorites in my book!
Dana says
Yay! I officially love your sister. I’m seeing Jersey Boys for the third time this fall – that show just makes me happy. So fun linking up with you again, Jen!
Linda says
Early Billy Joel. YES!
Dana says
The old stuff is the best, isn’t it?
Linda says
Yes! Give me “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant” any time. I love it.
Dana says
It was between that and Movin’ Out – I couldn’t decide. They’re both great!
