The short answer is no, you don’t. Read on for the long answer…
Our birthday boy Tom wanted to follow the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to celebrate his half century mark, so off we went. No, I am not a bourbon drinker, but I love to discover new places and learn new things, especially if I’m with fun people.
Day One on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail
Day Two on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail
Our tasting is the most educational one yet; our guide teaches us how to fully appreciate bourbon and drink it like a connoisseur. While I can’t say I was able to identify all the flavors, I did start to understand the complexity. That Kentucky Hug, though. It’s the warm sensation you get in your upper body after taking a sip, and after a dozen or so, I am losing steam.
Our final distillery is Four Roses, although we only have time for a tasting. I rally through; I am determined to finish all the tastings.
That evening we dine at Le Moo restaurant, and I am the only person who orders seafood instead of steak. This guy thanks me as we leave.
On our way back into Louisville, we take a detour over the bridge into Indiana. You know how some people make it a goal to visit each state? Some of those people are in the car with me. If you look closely, you cannot see those people because IT’S DARK and we are in the parking lot of a hospital. But they are in Indiana, so it counts, kinda.
Day Three on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail
We have brunch at a great place called Toast on Market, and then the guys visit one more distillery, Angel’s Envy. Like Evan Williams, it’s in downtown Louisville, so while they walk there, the girls walk the other way and do some shopping. Then we head to the one place you must visit that’s not on the Bourbon Trail – Churchill Downs.
Allie says
I love your travel posts! Rich works in Kentucky, so I have been to some of the distilleries. Girl, I am impressed – I could not hang for as many as you did. When you were in Frankfort, did you happen to go downtown? There’s really cool bookstore, across from the old capitol building, “Poor Richard’s Books.” I loved visiting there. Louisville is fun too! I’ve yet to go to Churchhill Downs, though.
Dana says
We only drove through downtown Frankfort, but I would have loved to visit that bookstore! Churchill Downs was fun – try to go when there are races, but I wouldn’t go near it during Derby season!

Wow! What an amazing way to celebrate a birthday!! I have recently acquired a taste for bourbon (Old Fashioned) since I started finding margaritas a bit too sweet! I like how you played with so many different combinations!
Dana says
Roshni, I enjoyed the less sweet taste of the whiskey sour, so I know what you mean!
Akaleistar says
Sounds like a fun and interesting trip!
Dana says
It was!
Kelly L McKenzie says
Cheers to an amazing way to celebrate a special birthday! I’m an absolute neophyte when it comes to bourbon and can’t remember the last time I had a sip. You’ve got me wanting to tipple! Loved that “whiskey thief” concept and, the Bourbon Cream topped with root beer sounds heavenly.
Dana says
Oh, it really is!
Julia Tomiak says
As always, I love your trip review! I have never heard of a “Bourbon Tour”, but since I actually like bourbon, perhaps this is something I should consider. Or maybe just visit just one distillery. Thanks for the fun story!
Dana says
You should definitely consider it, Julia! It’s such an easy flight from the East Coast, and it’s a great city.
Tamara says
You are truly amazing with this! It’s a bit beyond my comprehension, but I love the sense of adventure and the attention to detail.
Also, I was only in Indiana once, and most of it was all about it being a state I could cross off my list of states I’d never been in!
Dana says
Ha – sounds like the people I was with! It was such a fun adventure.
Kristi Campbell says
Did you like the whisky sour? I love whisky and scotch although it took my dad’s taste test to make that happen. What a fun and amazing trip. I didn’t know it was clear at one time. I always assumed brown liquor and clear were from the substance they came from.
Dana says
I did like the whiskey sour, Kristi. And yes, the brown color is from the barrel – pretty cool, huh?
Alison Hector says
Looks like you guys had a blast, Dana!
Dana says
We really did, Alison!
Ginnie says
I’m thinking Bourbon Cream and root beer sound like a plan tonight! Such a fun weekend!
Dana says
So fun!
Steph says
We just moved to Louisville and are excited to try these out!
Dana says
Oh, and you can take you time visiting them all! I’m sure many of these places are beautiful in the spring and early fall, too.
Allie says
Wow! That is a whole lotta bourbon my friend! I don’t blame you for getting bored by day two of the tours 🙂 I would endlessly be playing with my phone. Sounds like overall it was super fun and a great way to celebrate. Love the shot at Churchill Downs!! Great recap…but I’m still not drinking bourbon – LOL.
Dana says
I can’t say I blame you, but I am glad I added it to my repertoire – makes me feel a little fancy.
Janine Huldie says
I am like you a the vacation planner with the mostest here, too! So, loved seeing all you planned for your trip with your friend to celebrate 50! Looked like such a fun experience and will have to keep this in mind down the road possibly at some point, as well now.
Dana says
It’s a really fun trip, Janine – not at all like Disney, but still.;)
