I did not write a Love List for February, which is ironic given that this is the month of Cupid, hearts and flowers. I take my lists very seriously, though, and I just didn’t have five things to share with you that I felt were worthy of a place on my Love List. I’m hoping to have five for March, but I’m not holding myself to the first Monday of the month. When I have something worthy to share, I’ll share it.
In the meantime, this week’s Tuesday Ten is a love list, and Rabia and Lisa were kind enough to use my Love Lists as an example. While my lists are ideas, websites, or products that I want to share with you, I have plenty of ordinary loves as well. Two years ago, I wrote a list of twelve of these loves right here on my brand new blog, and I’m revisiting that post today. I’ve edited a bit and cut it down to ten, because I am a perfectionist and simply cannot just slap up an old post without trying to make it better.
1. Broadway musicals. Do You Hear the People Sing? You Can’t Stop the Beat when that orchestra starts playing, and musicals are among My Favorite Things. I admit I willingly watched the High School Musical movies with my kids, and this past weekend I introduced Gwen to the best movie musical ever, Grease. The show I love the most? Wicked, baby. I’ve seen it eight times in four different cities, and I’m going again in April. The moment the house lights go down and the music starts, I’m in my happy place.
2. Flipping my pillow to the cold side when I crawl into bed.
3. M&Ms. You can keep your fancy chocolates. The sound of M&Ms being poured into a bowl takes me back to my childhood. We rarely had candy in the house, but on nights when my mother hosted her mah jongg game, that sound made my mouth water in anticipation. The candies are best served straight from the freezer.
4. Brand new school supplies. It’s not because it means my kids are going back to school. I just love new pencils, a blank notebook, pristine folders, new crayons…I get giddy when the Staples back to school flyers start coming out in July. The heart made of cap erasers in the photo above? I made that with my own stash.
5. Jewelry. My love of bling is a trait that has been passed down from my grandmother to my mother to me. Going out without earrings makes me feel naked.
6. Holding my husband’s hand in public. I also love when he puts his arm around me when we are sitting next to each other. His cold feet against my leg under the covers, I do not love so much.
8. Books. In any and all forms: my own, from the library, e-books. I read while I walk my dog Nellie, and I only rarely run into a parked car.
9. Purging. I love getting rid of crap around the house that we don’t need. I only toss something I should have held onto about one percent of the time, and I can live with those odds.
10. My bed. It is Heavenly. Literally – it’s the Westin Heavenly Bed and it is awesome. I consider it a great test of my willpower to not crawl back into it at 7:40 every morning when James goes to school, especially in the winter.
What is something ordinary in your life that you love?
Catherine Gacad says
my tempurpedic bed is my most prized possession! oh and i love wicked too.
Dana says
I bet you love your bed even more now that you’re a mom! I have a date with mine in about an hour. Can’t wait.
My Inner Chick says
2. Flipping my pillow to the cold side when I crawl into bed
Such simple things…
but soooooooo beautiful!! xxx
Dana says
Reminds me of your “I effing love…” post – these types of pieces always make me smile.
Kenya G. Johnson says
I used to put M&M’s in a shot glass and that would be my once a day treat. I didn’t “shoot” them, they were frozen and I ate them one at a time. But yeah of I love the sound of them being poured into glass.
Christopher is my only singing in the car witness. I swear I can carry a tune when I’m by myself but when he’s there I can’t get on key and then he ends up tapping me saying, “Give it up mom.” That picture of Nellie looks like she’s saying “Give it up mom” after you’ve run into a parked car.
Dana says
That’s probably what she’s thinking! She lunges after crows every once in awhile on our walks just to keep me on my toes.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
I love the feel of a pillow flipped to the cold side, too. I especially loved it when I was little and visited my grandma’s house. 🙂
Dana says
Aww, that’s such a sweet memory Debbie.
Mo at Mocadeaux says
Every summer when the back-to-school ads start appearing, my heart is all a-flutter! My absolute favorite is the variety pack of Flair markers. And, although I can purge with the best of them, my school/office supplies is one category I allow myself to collect with impunity.
Dana says
I agree – you can never have too many school supplies!
Charlene @Teacherbytrade-Motherbynature says
Love your list, Dana! (and your monthly blog series: My Love Lists) Ooh I LOVE school supplies too! I am a teacher by trade, so I get all giddy when i read the school supplies catalogue as well – I can totally go crazy with new stationery supplies – one can never have too many pens and notebooks 🙂
A few things on my LOVE list right now…organisation, a cup of Bell tea, to-do lists, and Ikea catalogues
Dana says
Those are great things to love, Charlene!
Rudri Bhatt Patel @ Being Rudri says
I do a similar list on my blog, but call it monthly delights. It usually focuses on ordinary things that make me happy. So many of the items on your list resonate with me. I love books and M & M’s.
And early morning runs, a cup of coffee and the sound of my favorite song on the radio.
Dana says
It’s good to remember the ordinary things that make us happy – we are lucky to have so many of them, and we shouldn’t forget that.
Nicki says
I thought your heart was made of chocolate curls until you said it was erasers! It’s even better now that I know it’s erasers.
I love:
My red boots
Tea (especially in my favorite mug)
The smell of spring
Books (of course)
Musicals (of course)
Very very soft pjs
Thank you for the opportunity to think about this! xo
Dana says
If your favorite mug is the one from Anthropologie, then it is my favorite mug too. We have many of the same loves, Nicki!
Lisa @ The Golden Spoons says
I love “just because” hugs from my girls. I love our bed, too. It’s a Tempurpedic and it is awesome! I have one of the memory foam pillows, too, and I love it. Thanks for linking up and letting us steal your Love List idea!
Dana says
My pleasure, Lisa!
Tammie Smith says
All of the above and especially the smell of crayons, and freshly sharpened pencils. (And the smell of a roll of tape!) I’m a pen, pencil, crayon, ruler loving addict too! Don’t take me to Staples, I may never want to leave.
Dana says
Ha – you are right about the smells! Staples is one of my favorite places too.
Eli@coachdaddy says
1. It’s kit-kats for me. Especially if I don’t have to share. But I will share.
2. I’m just thankful my 10-year-old will still hold my hand in public!
3. I just purged my desk at work and got rid of a ton. But there’s still so much. I guess this qualifies as the good stuff, right?
*Glad to see you on Rabia’s linkup!
Dana says
I can appreciate a good kit-kat, Eli. I rarely refuse a chocolate candy bar, unfortunately.
Kelly McKenzie says
I have spent the past week going through the filing cabinet and shredding, shredding, shredding. Your willingness to purge is admirable and I suspect you’d never EVER find the need to shred the vet files of a beloved dog that was actually a two beloved dogs ago dog.
Btw – do you still walk and read while dog walking?
I’m off to shred. Again. Fingers crossed the shredder doesn’t overheat too early on in today’s process.
Dana says
I hate when that happens. And yes, I still walk and read. Although I recently started listening to audio books instead, because it’s too cold to hold a book, even with gloves on.
Rabia @TheLiebers says
If I head to bed after my husband, I often find him sleeping on my side of the bed. He says he does it to warm it up. I think that’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard! I love that! Of course, he still has cold feet, so I have to beware there!
Dana says
My husband uses me as his personal heater – I am usually in bed before he is, and then it’s all warm under the covers by the time he gets in!
Christine Organ says
I’m so with you on the books, musicals, singing, and purging. Also cookie dough, coffee, sweatpants, music, and unexpected emails from a friend.
Dana says
And I’m with you on all of those! Especially coffee, and especially when served with M&M’s.
Kristi Campbell says
I love school supplies. Tucker has so much construction paper, a billion markers, pencils, cool erasers, etc because I can’t resist! Great list, Dana! Here’s to the cool side of the pillow and holding hands.
PS you look good green 🙂
Dana says
Why thank you! I’ve recently discovered that it’s a good color for me.
Kristen Daukas says
SCHOOL SUPPLIES!!! I just bought ours last weekend because it was Walmart’s BTS sale. It just signifies to me the start of a new year.. fresh sheet of paper.. new opportunities for us all. We need to change the calendar to reflect that the first day of school is really the “new year”!
Dana says
I know, I love it. Can’t wait to hit Staples for school supplies – although I think I’m good with cap erasers!
AnnMarie says
I love your list! I always turn my pillow and I still melt when my hubby holds my hand or puts his arm around me in public. I will admit this to you since you have listed it as your love: I hoard new school supplies and books. As I type this I am sitting at Barnes and Noble, the place that enables me to hoard the books. Visiting from LOBS and am a fellow Meltdown Mom. 🙂
Dana says
Hi Ann Marie – thanks for stopping by! Love Barnes and Noble – I have a Nook so when I’m there I can read any ebook for free for a little while – heaven!
Nicole @ Work in Sweats Mama says
Stopping by from Ladies Only Blog Share. Great list! Some of my favorite ordinary things are flip flops, fountain Coke, snail mail, and dance parties with my daughters!
Dana says
Thanks, Nicole. Love your favorites too. A fountain soda just tastes better than one from a can or bottle – why is that?
Kris says
Oh, Dana, regarding school supplies . . . me too . . . me TOO!! I LOVE them. May be slightly addicted to them (though I don’t have a cap eraser collection – that’s impressive). I have WAY too many journals and pencils and pens (especially purple ones).
And you know how happy I was to see your #1 love. Mine, too!! Unliiiiiiiiiiiiimmmiteddd . . . our future is unLIIIIIImmmmited!
Great list. Thanks for sharing.
P.S. Maybe you can start a purging business and start practicing at my house. :-/
Dana says
Thanks for the serenade, Kris – you always make me smile! And I would make a kick ass professional purger 🙂
running mama says
I LOVE musicals too! (so does the hubby), I skipped Smashed, I couldn’t handle another addiction like Glee.
Dana says
Awwwww – c’mon – you know you want it!
Maple Syrup Land says
YES to books, the cold side of the pillow and jeans!
Jenn @ Something Clever 2.0 says
Your husband’s the one with the cold feet? How progressive!
Dana says
That’s because I’m wearing socks 🙂
Lynne says
The things I love are 1. hugging my children and grandchildren 2. Answering the phone only to hear a little voice say, Grammie. 3. Returning home after a vacation 4. Sleeping in my own bed 5. Jewelry and last but not least, 6. chocolate.
Dana says
Pretty similar! Thanks for sharing (and pointing out my typo).
