What is the best part of your day?
That’s the Finish the Sentence Friday prompt, and it’s not an easy one to finish. I don’t have one best part; my days are filled with many little best parts. Some days have more than others. Lunch with friends, a date night, and family get-togethers are parts that are planned and that I know will be the highlight of the day.
But most days are ordinary, and the best parts are buried in the mundane details. Then it’s just a matter of looking for them. Sometimes they get eclipsed by worst parts, but at least a few are always there.
The best parts of my day are:
1. My first sip of my first cup of coffee
2. Getting the new issue on Entertainment Weekly in the mail
3. The moment I hear, “Hey, Mom!” as my kids walk in the door after school
4. Finding out my high schooler has hardly any homework
5. All four of us watching Modern Family on the couch
6. Turning off the lights in a completely clean kitchen after dinner
7. Settling into bed on a cool pillow
8. Putting away the last piece of folded laundry
9. Crossing things off my to-do list
10. Reading for twenty minutes while I walk the dog
11. Reading a new post from one of my favorite bloggers
12. Any time I laugh
karen says
love all the favorite parts of your day, so sweet and cute. It;s the little things that always mean so much.
Dana says
They do – we just have to remember to not lose sight of them!
Barbara @ www.allmylivesnow.com says
The best part of my day is made up of many parts like yours. My morning cup of coffee is the first best part. Crawling into my perfectly made up bed at the end of the day and listening to the ceiling fan whirl away, making a soft humming sound which never fails to put me to sleep is my last best part.
Dana says
Love those, Barbara! I can’t understand how my kids can get into unmade beds every night – I love turning down the blanket and snuggling in.
Shae says
This is a great post. So many people forget to enjoy the simple things in life. And I see you are a Modern Family fan- I have yet to jump on that bandwagon but I am becoming more and more interested as I see all the people who love it!
Dana says
It is a great show, Shae. So witty. And only 22 minutes or so without commercials – you could be caught up in no time!
Jean says
I love that you watch Modern Family with everyone. I love watching that show with my husband. I think because they manage to make the show funny but also capture very real life emotions and situations that watching it with family is a collective “OMG that’s us.”
I have started complaining about a part of our neighborhood that needs a stop sign and my husband just said “And you wonder why I think you’re Claire?” ha.
Dana says
I have some Claire in me too, Jean. But my husband is nothing like Phil. But you’re right, there are times when we watch and all four of us say – that is totally something we would do!
Allie says
I really love #6! I thought I was the only nutcase who got that beautiful satisfaction! great post!!
Dana says
Nope, you are not the only nutcase. Nice to know I’m in good company!
Michelle says
The laundry actually gets put away in your house? My kids never put it away, they just take it out of their baskets. Clearly mother of the year I am not. Hahahaha!
Dana says
Well, my laundry gets put away. The kids’ sit in baskets in their rooms until I need the baskets for the next load, then I make them put it away. I’ll never get mother of year either!
Lisa @ The Golden Spoons says
I love this take on the prompt! There are lots of “best parts” and I love that you listed them! ๐
Dana says
I do love my lists ๐
Shay says
Dana, you may not want to hear this, but you and I are VERY much alike! ๐ I would say that my list would mirror yours. I also love having happily fed, bathed, and tired kids ready for bed after a fun, busy, and productive day–but cuddling with them first. Oh, and the moment just after a tough workout is completed and you know you’ll feel great all day. And when the library calls with a book you’ve been waiting for…and knocking a really good writing session out of the park. So many great things!
Dana says
I take that as a compliment, Shay! And yes to all the things you added too. I get emails from the library, but they make me very happy!
Alison says
All good and awesome things!
I’m with you on the first sip of coffee and a clean kitchen after dinner.
Dana says
So good, right? Even better if someone else cleaned the kitchen ๐
catherine gacad says
oh those lines across the to-do list are major cause for celebration!
Dana says
They certainly are! I think that’s why I like handwritten lists – so I can cross items out!
Katia says
Reading some of this actually made me long for the days all four of us will settle in bed to watch something together. Love that you do that and Modern Family is such a perfect choice!
Dana says
It really is the perfect show to watch with the kids. That is one of the great parts about older kids – we want to watch many of the same things! Watching Glee together is bonding time for my daughter and me, and we all love Modern Family.
Melissa says
The best parts of my day are my hubby getting home from work. Sitting at the table eating dinner with my family. Cuddling in bed with my hubby. Hot showers. Quiet moments to myself.
Dana says
Those all sound wonderful, Melissa. I hope you get them every day!
Leah says
I’m with you on 3-12… But how do you walk a dog and read?!?! The little moments are really the best! I downloaded your book and can’t wait to dive into it!!
Dana says
I don’t know how I do it, Leah. Years of practice I guess. Thanks for downloading the book – hope you like it!
Menopausal Mother says
I love everything on your list. Ohhh, that first sip of coffee starts everything off right. I like to end my day cuddling my pugs, then going to bed on clean sheets with a great book and a soft pillow. Perfect.
Dana says
Yes it is, Marcia! Now I’m getting sleepy; I may have to take a Saturday afternoon nap.
Kelly McKenzie says
Just discovered you via my blogging pal Mo over at Mocadeaux. Love your list of bests. What’s your secret for reading as you walk the dog? I’d be tripping flat on my face if I did that while walking border collie cross Poppy. Knowing me – I’d land right in the creek. Also love Modern Family. Felt it slipped a bit last year however is back on track now. And a 1000 yeses to “anytime I laugh.” Brilliant.
Dana says
Thank you so much for visiting, Kelly. Reading and walking the dog – I’m honestly not sure how I do it without tripping more often. My dog Nellie has some border collie in her too. We walk at a leisurely pace, and the only time I get in trouble is when Nellie decides to dart after a squirrel. It’s just so much easier to motivate myself to take her for a walk if I’m reading a good book.
The Dose of Reality says
Your head hitting a cold pillow at the end of a long day…ahhhhhh…that is BLISS!! I loved all of your bests, though!! Great list!! Oh, and I really hope you guys make it to #1 on the Best Seller’s List! Go, Mother of All Meltdowns!! –Lisa
Dana says
Thank you Lisa – we so appreciate you and Ashley being such fabulous supporters! Now when are you going to come out with a book of your “would you rathers?” or “pinterest nightmares”?
Mo at Mocadeaux says
Any moments that include laughter are, indeed, the best part of the day. We also find those moments of laughter watching Modern Family. How DO they keep the quality of writing so high week after week, year after year?!
PS I bought the book for my kindle. Can’t wait to read it!
Dana says
They must have a brilliant team of writers. I wish I had my own team some days! I hope you enjoy the book, Mo – let me know what you think. Well, if you don’t like it, maybe you shouldn’t let me know ๐
Beth teliho says
Great list! Already have the book and love love it! So much it even inspired a post the other day!
I also relish that first sip of coffee. The comment from your dad was precious. ๐
Dana says
So glad you liked it, Beth. And heading over now to peek at your sideboob – yay!
Alison Hector says
One of the best parts of my day is reading blogs like yours and just smiling as I enjoy the stories being told.
BTW, I read your portion of Mother of All Meltdowns last night and cracked up at “Evil Mommy”. I bought the book on the weekend, so I missed out on the special today. But I didn’t mind paying full price. It is so worth it! Congrats again, Dana!
Dana says
Thank you for your kind words Alison – about my blog and my story. Fortunately, I am normal Mommy far more often than I am Evil Mommy!
Joi says
Yes, I’d have a few too and it depends on what day. I always enjoy reading blogs and watching TV. I usually make it a point to enjoy a meal!
Dana says
As you should Joi – I always get annoyed with myself when I eat without really thinking about it. What a bad habit, and a waste of good food.
Kate says
I also like coming home to a clean kitchen- although that means I have to clean it before I leave!
Dana says
I know. I’m not super clean, but I can’t stand leaving the house with dishes in the sink. Dust in the corners, yes – but a dirty kitchen drives me nuts.
Tamara says
I love the first sip of coffee, over my new Us Weekly. (close enough magazine, right?) And I love a clean kitchen and a cool pillow and that moment I relax in front of one of my shows. And yes, “Modern Family” is totally one of my favorites.
And a new blog post? It’s like Christmas. Only it happens like 50 times a day!
Dana says
I know – and I don’t always have time to open all the presents!
Amber says
Modern Family is hilarious!
Dana says
It is! Some of the humor goes over my son’s head a bit, but he’s old enough that I feel comfortable explaining it to him.
Kim says
I love the reminder to find the “best parts” in just a normal day. So many of your list would be on mine, too!! (minus reading and walking the dog since we don’t have a dog!)
Sorry I can’t help out on the book – I already bought it on my Nook – not 0.99 but not a bad price at all!!!
Dana says
I’m a Nook girl, too, Kim. Thank you for buying it – hope you like it!
Kenya G. Johnson says
Awww I wish I had someone to watch Modern Family with. Our family show with me, Mom, Dad and my brother was The Cosby Show. It was nice that we all got to sit still and tune in “live”.
Love it that you made a list out of your. As much as it means switch gears and going into my second or third shift for the day, I love the sound of, “Hey Mom”.
Love that Dad commented!
Dana says
We watched the Cosby Show as a family too – such great memories! And I loved that my dad commented too.
Sarah {LeftBrainBuddha} says
Love it! I treasure my morning coffee! And finishing everything on a to-do list is an amazing feeling. Great list!
Dana says
Thanks, Sarah!
Kerri says
If I tried to read while walking the dog I would trip, fall, do a Dick Van Dyke (man, I’m old) and generally make a fool out of myself.
You are my hero.
Oh and FYI I do a happy dance whenever it is a no homework night.
Dana says
I’ve only tripped a few times, but no one was looking. I hope.
DanasDad says
One of the best parts of my day: reading my daughter’s latest blog entry.
Dana says
Aww, thanks Dad. One of my best parts: reading my daddy’s comment on my latest blog entry.
Laura says
Thanks for letting us know about the .99 download. I got it! Hope you enjoy your bonus day with the kids. Oh, and my best part of the day for me, the minute I get to close my eyes and drift off to sleep! I love sleep!
Dana says
Yay, Laura – thanks! If you like it, I’d love for you to leave a review on Amazon. One of my best parts today will be seeing you later ๐
Nicole @ Work in Sweats Mama says
Many of the best parts of my day are the little things too. My little one saying ‘Mommmeeee’ and reaching up to get out of her crib. My oldest bursting through the front door and into my office at quitting time. A huge fountain Coke after a long run!
Dana says
Oh, I remember the reaching up to get out of the crib. Love that. Now I have big bear hugs and my daughter can pick me up, but love that just as much. <3
Kristi Campbell says
YES! So many Best Parts. But um. How do you read while you walk the dog? Also UGH I should have said something about our awesome book…
Oh, And laughing. Yes. that. always, that…
Dana says
Sometimes I bump into parked cars, but usually I do okay. It’s a gift, really.
Janine Huldie says
All great things indeed and my favorite is the last one and love just being able to laugh at something and enjoy myself. Wonderful and really did love reading about your best parts of the day here and thank you Dana for linking up with us again!!
Dana says
Always fun, Janine. Have a great weekend!
